York, St Nicholas Fair
Immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas with a visit to the charming city of York. The St Nicholas Fair is a festive-filled Christmas Market which brings seasonal cheer to the city, with Scandinavian-style wooden chalets. Festooned in twinkling pea-lights, local Yorkshire food producers, winter-warming drinks, and decorations and crafts not found on the high street will be on offer. York’s medieval cobbled streets come alive for this favourite event, and the traffic-free centre is a great place to shop and sightsee all year-round, all within the ancient city walls. A visit to the Castle Museum is recommended, where you walk through lifelike replicas of Victorian and Edwardian streets, or alternatively call into the mighty Minster or walk along the cobbled streets of The Shambles.
Day 1 Departure: 0800 – 0900 hrs, making a comfort stop en-route. Arrive York lunchtime, spend the afternoon shopping or sightseeing. Indulge in some retail therapy where you’ll be spoilt for choice. Step back in time in this ancient town, which comprises of tempting specialist craft shops, stylish boutiques, quality antique shops and book dealers – here you’ll be sure to find a special, unique Christmas present or a lovely treat for yourself. Take the time to meander through the charming Tudor buildings and cobbled streets of The Shambles which holds a wonderful, quaint atmosphere. There are plenty of cafés and tearooms for you to watch the world go by in – a perfect break from browsing in the charming shops. Since the city is renowned for its Roman, Viking and Medieval heritage, you could explore the great array of intriguing attractions such as the iconic JORVIK Viking Centre, the York Castle Museum or take a peaceful and entertaining guided boat trip along the River Ouse.
Day 2 After breakfast, spend the morning at leisure, and maybe do some sightseeing. Depart mid-afternoon. Arrive home: early evening.
