Little Railways of the Rhine
This exciting new itinerary features journeys on some of the most charming little railways of the Rhine as well as relaxing cruises along the Rhine and Moselle rivers, all of which offer panoramic views and spectacular scenery – jump on board, relax and watch the beautiful scenery gently pass you by…
Day 1 Departure: 0400-0500 hrs. Travel to Folkestone, making a comfort stop en-route. Catch the 1020 hours Eurotunnel to Calais. Travel onwards to our destination. Hotel check-in. Dinner is included.
Day 2 River Rhine Cruise & Drachenfelsbahn
Free time in Boppard before taking a cruise upstream through the northern section of the UNESCO protected Upper Middle Rhine Valley, to Oberlahnstein, from where we continue by coach to Königswinter, a historic Rhine Valley town located at the foot of the Siebengebirge Hills. Join the Drachenfelsbahn, Germany’s oldest cog railway, for a return journey. From the valley station to the summit we cover a height difference of 220m and at the top we see the ruined medieval Drachenfels (‘dragon’s cliff’) Castle and great views across the river Rhine. After time in Königswinter, return to hotel by coach.
Day 3 Cochem and Moselle Cruise
Head to the Moselle Valley and the pretty riverside town of Cochem from where we embark on a return cruise along the Moselle River, enjoying views of Reichsburg Castle and the surrounding vineyards. After our cruise, spend the rest of the day in Cochem at leisure, with time to explore the Old Town, made up of quaint squares, winding alleys, half-timbered buildings and imposing town gates, watched over by its magnificent 11th century Reichsburg Castle, a Gothic masterpiece which is perched on a rocky outcrop from where fantastic views are to be had.
Day 4 Vulkan Express and Mayschoss Wine Tasting
Travel to Brohl for a journey on the Vulkan Express, a unique narrow gauge railway. The line meanders up through the Brohl Valley into the Eifel Hills, whose dramatic rock formations were created during a period of volcanic activity. Opened in 1901, the 11 mile journey takes one and a half hours as the locomotives reach a speed of 20kph, climbing around 1,310 ft! We continue by coach from Engeln to the Ahr Valley, one of Germany’s most famous wine growing regions where we visit the charming town of Mayschoss and enjoy wine tasting in one of the town’s traditional wine cellars.
